Our Guide To Interior Design Project Planning

Here at Gilroy Interiors we love to help clients turn their ideas into rooms that work beautifully and just feel right. Good project planning keeps costs low, control timelines realistic and decisions clear. This guide helps to walk you through all the practical steps from brief to the finishing touches.

The Initial Brief

Start with making a clear brief. Note how you use each room, who will be using it and what you want to feel. Think about lighting, privacy and acoustic needs. A brief helps to save time and helps to prioritise choices later on.

Budgeting and Timelines

Set a realistic budget early on in your project. Allow for contingencies of about 10-15 percent and set funds aside to structure finishes and furnishings. Timelines should include ordering times for bespoke pieces like curtains, blinds and made to measure shutters. Expect some flexibility around manufacturing or delivery.

Design Concept and Material Selection

Make a concept board to test colours, textures and materials. We recommend starting with fixed elements such as floors or window frames then layer in the soft furnishings. Choosing fabrics early on helps to make sure that your window dressings match the scheme and arrive on time.

Important things to consider:

  • Function and durability of fabrics depending on room use
  • Light control and privacy requirements
  • Coordination with existing furniture and architectural details

Working With Trades and Managing Contractors

Share your brief to all trades at the beginning of the project. A simple schedule with milestones helps to prevent any misunderstandings. If you are coordinating installers for blinds, tracks or poles check measurements twice. Regular site checks keeps quality high and the project on track.

Sampling and Approvals

Order fabric samples and small finish samples before committing. Seeing materials in your light can often change your opinion. Approve samples in writing and keep notes about where each sample will be used.

Installation and Finishing Touches

On install day make sure that access is clear and the installers have precise instructions. For window dressings this includes pole heights, stackback allowances and cornice details. After installation take the time to style cushions, throws and accessories to complete the space.

Our experience with made to measure curtains, blinds and shutters means fewer surprises and a smoother process. Why not make a visit to one of our showrooms or get in contact with a member of our team and we’ll help you with your interior design needs.
