COLE & SON FINE WALLPAPER COLLECTIONS
The Cole & Son story – the company began life back in 1873, founded by John Perry, a vicar’s son from Cambridgeshire. The firm was originally situated in an old wallpaper mill in North London. In the 18th and 19th centuries Islington was famous for the hundreds of hand block printing companies that were based there. Cole & Son printed for all the large well-known companies including Jeffrey & Co, Sanderson and Shane Kydd. In addition to high quality block prints the company was renowned for supplying beautiful stripes and jaspes.
Today, Cole & Son’s factory is in Haringey – just a few miles north of the original site. Its archive consists of approximately 1,800 block print designs, 350 screen print designs and a huge quantity of original drawings – reflecting the styles and trends of the last three centuries.
